These days, it may sound a bit corny to make an effort and download American folk songs, but actually, it makes a lot of sense. This is everybody's history, and it won't hurt to know about the original music of one of the most (if not the most) influential country in the world.

The Folk music of America does not have a definite beginning, although just like other folk music, American folk songs served a traditional purpose rather than entertainment. In fact, they are even considered as oral histories.

American folk music was virtually owned by the working class. It rarely enjoyed commercial success and was always focused on a community. The songs were very easy to understand and relate to. Everyone who identified themselves with them was encouraged to participate.

The general themes of folk songs were love, work, war, economic hardships and civil rights. Usually, these songs talked about the struggles in life and the hopes of the people to triumph over them. They sprang from the desire of the striving generation to get somewhere better and see things beyond working hard and toiling for their living.

Folk music found its way back to the American psyche in the 20th century when workers had to struggle again-- struck for the laws of child labor and the 8-hour work day. Workers gathered in living rooms, churches, and union halls learning these songs which helped them cope with the difficulty at the time.
